Article in today's Sun states that PL & EFL games could be paused next month to allow players to break fasts.
Refs given instructions to allow players to allow fasting players to take on energy supplements.

Hopefully this won't affect benny or aguerd
they won't be able to eat during daylight hours and might be detrimental to their energy levels

Nursey. You are right.

Eerie, the undoubted rise in narcissism may equally be an inevitable consequence of the boom in social media. As I have said before, anything that encourages every no-mark to put themselves at the centre of the universe will most likely have unpleasant wider consequences.

Ha! For gap-fillers, you can take your pick. Conspiracy theories; Marxism; gender wafflery; climate doom-mongery, the paranormal; the notion that bears are real; social media 'influencers'...it's a large menu.

Good post, Nursey.
I was chatting with mates over the weekend about whether the decrease in religious belief had been replaced by an increase in people embracing, almost as a substitute, other bonkers (if I may call them that) ideas such as conspiracy theories.

Can't say we ended up with any answers though.

They were not the first to have fasted or displayed other forms of self denial, nor are they now the only religion that does so.

Not questioning why they do it, just don’t understand why this sort of thing is increasingly only associated with Islam.

Nurse. A very well reasoned and thought out point of view. However, none of those arguments are why muslims fast. They fast because Ramadan was the mont that the Quran was sent down as a guide to mankind so that mankind can distinguish between right and wrong. yes, all of mankind, not an arrogant religion at all.

Fasting is then decreed to attain Tarqwa (or Tarka the Otter for all I care) which is meant to be anact of righteousness, fear of Allah and total submission towards Him. Okay, then, so dieting does all that who knew.

But I agree with all your points on the breakdown of family and the way it is just someone else's fault for everything. Good post Nurse

Isn’t there a North African Christian sect (or maybe middle-eastern), that fast for a longer period, both in days and length during each day?

Not that it’s a competition, just trying to remember their name.

At the wailing wall anyone can walk around the Jewish bit as long as you cover you head and stick to what ever sex you are side.

The muzzy bit is protected by the Israeli army and you have to be Muslim to get past them.

On the other hand, from an anthropological point of view, it's interesting that for thousands of centuries, so many religions/cultures have kept up an element of fasting in their traditions. Obviously religions/cultures all influenced each other as humans moved around a bit, but it is thought-provoking that these practices endure. Makes me wonder if there's something valuable in a short period of self-denial. We have discarded (with scorn) so many of our forebears' wisdom, but since the 'enlightenment' of the 1960s, we appeared to have collapsed in many ways (lack of stoicism; family breakdown; generations on welfare; hostility between the sexes, I could go on...). Though of course there has also been progress, no denying that. Maybe we atheists should think about that from time to time and borrow some ideas (e.g. stoicism; self-reliance; a short period of self-denial) from ancient wisdom. After all, we've apparently only been grown up and enlightened for the last fifty years since The Beatles and Mary Quant, but humans were around for a fair few years before that.

Re: Happy Ramadan
What a fucked up religion, well all religions are fucked up as they are man made fairy stories. Especially, as they think not eating during daylight hours is somehow a religious thing. It's not it's called a fucking diet.

I worked in Saudi for over 2 long years back in the 80's and I was training Saudi's in IT at Jeddah airport. None of them turned up at Ramadan saying they were ill, well not eating and drinking water for 8+ hours may do that. Then stuffing your faces for the next 16 hours will also not help. Still you're getting nearer to Allah doing it. Quite how is a bit beyond me. Still there's always the 72 virgins to look forward to, only the men mind not the others, the cooking, cleaning and ironing ones, no not them, obviously.

OTB

I worked in Riyad for a short while.

If I left the hotel I was in long t shirt, jeans, flip flops.

Inside the hotel it doesn't matter.

You will find if the hotel staff see you trying to leave in what they think isn't appropriate, they will give you a heads up, same as trying to go for a walk during prayer.

Hopefully you can help - can I wear shorts during the day there during Ramadan? I asked locals on Reddit and someone said it would be fine, but everything online says 'be modest, cover up'.
